GPW Market Data Latency: Why Nanoseconds Matter

Why GPW market-data latency matters for algorithmic trading, how to assess performance claims, and why consistency and data quality matter alongside speed.

By Fintech91 · Published

In algorithmic trading, receiving a market update sooner can give a system more time to assess a changing price or order book. For professional participants considering the Warsaw Stock Exchange, known as GPW or WSE, the age of the information reaching their strategy is therefore an important part of the access decision.

But speed is useful only in context. A latency figure should help a trading team understand the service it is evaluating and whether that service suits its strategy. The smallest advertised number is not, by itself, a complete assessment.

Why the timing of market data matters

A market-data feed records changes in the market. An automated strategy uses those updates to decide whether to act. If information arrives later, the market may already have moved by the time the system responds. The significance of that delay depends on the instruments, trading conditions and the strategy’s decision horizon.

A strategy reacting to short-lived changes may be sensitive to very small delays. A longer-horizon strategy may place greater value on dependable delivery, broad coverage or simpler operations. Both need data appropriate to the decisions they make.

Nanoseconds need a meaningful comparison

A nanosecond is one billionth of a second. At that scale, even a small difference can be relevant to a sufficiently time-sensitive system. It does not follow that every strategy needs nanosecond optimisation, or that a lower number guarantees a better trading outcome.

Before comparing two performance claims, ask what each figure measures. A delay within one component and the delay experienced by a trading application describe different things. Meaningful comparisons use equivalent measurement boundaries and clearly stated conditions.

A useful question for buyers

Does the performance evidence describe the service my application will use, under conditions relevant to my trading activity?

Consistency matters alongside speed

The fastest observation shows what happened in a favourable case. It does not explain how consistently the service performs. Professional teams should also assess typical behaviour and the less frequent delays that can appear during busy market periods.

Predictable delivery can make a system easier to evaluate and operate. Unexpected delays, missing updates and recovery events can affect the usefulness of otherwise fast data. A service review should consider these behaviours together.

Data quality is part of the decision

Timely information still needs to be complete and usable. Teams should understand what the feed contains, how interruptions are identified and how service is restored. The requirements of an automated application can differ substantially from those of a screen displaying current prices.

A practical assessment combines performance evidence with data suitability, operational support and total cost. The appropriate balance depends on the customer’s strategy and resources.

What to ask when evaluating GPW access

  • What does the stated latency measure, and which conditions apply?
  • How does performance vary during representative trading activity?
  • What evidence supports the claims, and what limitations are stated?
  • How are data interruptions and recovery handled?
  • Which market-data usage rights and costs apply to the intended application?

GPW publishes official market-data information, including display and non-display usage categories. Teams should confirm the terms applicable to their intended use with the exchange or provider.

Speed supports a strategy; it does not establish one

Lower latency does not guarantee execution, queue position or profitability. Liquidity, transaction costs, competition and risk controls also influence outcomes. Performance should be evaluated against the customer’s actual requirements and supported by appropriate evidence.
